Nedjim à Timimoun - Algérie

Nedjim en Algérie

English
The band known as LABESS (which means “everything’s all right” in Arabic), features Nedjim accompanied by such talents as ierre Emmanuel Poizat (clarinet), Tacfarinas Kichou and Anes Beglerbegovic (percussions) and Georgi Stankov (bass). Nedjim, who sometimes sings in Arabic and other times in French, offers songs that celebrate tolerance and freedom with rich, festive melodies and styles ranging from Spanish flamenco to those of the Arabic/Berber world.

Formed less than three years ago, the band has already played twice on TV shows and has played live at the Francofolies de Montréal, Festival du Monde Arabe, Rythmes du Monde du Saguenay, The National Arts Centre in Ottawa and in various places across Quebec. They also opened for Rachid Taha in Montreal and in Ottawa. Their first album, “Tout Va Bien”, has been nominated for Best World Music Album of the Year at the 2007 ADISQ awards (Quebec JUNOS).

All’s well indeed on TOUT VA BIEN, Labess’ first full length recording. This festive musical celebration is charismatic signer/songwriter Nedjim Bouizzoul’s tribute to tolerance and liberty through sound. Seamlessly going from French to Arabic through Cuban Guaracha, Flamenco and the mixed roots of North Africa’s Berber and Black African cultures TOUT VA BIEN, like its creator, is an intriguing yet friendly hybrid which will be impossible to ignore.

Montrealers were first seduced by Nedjim during the summer of 2003 as he filled the subway tunnels of his adoptive town with the smooth sound of his guitar and the raw edge of his voice. His exceptional guitar skills quickly got him noticed by other professional musicians leading to many fruitful collaborations and the creation of an eclectic multi-textured quintet. Labess (All’s well in Arabic) are Nedjim Bouizzoul, Pierre Emmanuel Poizat on clarinet, percussionists Takfarinas Kichou and Anes Beglerbegovic, and bass player Georgi Stankov.

After many gigs in a variety of Montréal venues including Le Divan Orange, Les Bobards and Le Balattou, in January 2005 Labess is invited to take part in the popular TV show Belle et Bum, hosted by Normand Brathwaite and aired on Télé-Québec. This got the band noticed by the organizers of the Festival du Maghreb which they inaugurated in Montréal. Since then the band has also fronted the famous Rachid Taha in Montreal and Ottawa and taken part in many a festival including the Francofolies de Montréal, Rythmes du monde de Chicoutimi, Théâtre de Verdure’s Musique et Traditions du Monde and the Festival du monde arabe (FMA). This last show was recorded and broadcasted by Espace Musique (Radio Canada’s French equivalent of CBC’s Radio 2) . In November 2005, Nedjim Bouizzoul is yet again invited to take part in Belle et Bum and is also included on the show’s compilation CD “Les rythmes de Belle et Bum”.

Since then, the group has been all over the province of Québec taking part in many events and festivals.

Labess’ first album TOUT VA BIEN, released by Les disques Anubis, has been in stores since March 2007.
